Yes, we have date nights as a family. What does this mean exactly? Well, it’s simple, we spend quality time together as a family and do something that we don’t normally do. It can be anything really, as long as it’s fun, enjoyable for everyone, and COVID conscious (so mostly things at home or in nature).
It’s important as a couple or for yourself if you’re a single parent, to enjoy some time away from your kid(s). We do this to reconnect, rest, breathe, laugh, relax etc. But we also need to take time to do this as a family as well. No, I’m not talking about dinner at the table every night. Although that is a nice way to spend time as a family and talk about each other’s days, it’s just as important to take time “away” as a family for the same reasons mentioned above.
Children require that one-on-one uninterrupted quality time doing something enjoyable. It shows children how to maintain relationships, and it also shows them the importance of taking “time away” to reconnect and nurture not only those relationships, but also themselves. This is especially important during this pandemic. Children have been cooped up, doing the same routine day after day at home. It can be really redundant, boring, and quite exhausting. We, as adults, feel and understand the complexity of this pandemic but for the most part children don’t and they need an outlet just as much as we do. Now more than ever it is okay to let some of those rules slip on by.
Below I will list some fun ideas for your family to try. Let us know if you try any of these or if you have any traditions of your own and tag us on our FB/Insta with a pic of your fun family date night!
- Living room/backyard campout
- Movie night
- Art night (spend the evening being creative and making all kinds of art together-check out blog for ideas)
- Backyard/living room picnic
- Bike riding
- If you have snow in your area, spend some time playing in it
- Cook a meal together
- Build a garden
- Water balloon fight
We never get snow in our area and when we do, you can tell it’s not very much. So when it snowed recently, we made a whole day out of it and we played for hours. We all had a blast, even the little one joined in!
